Standard Service Station

Southeast corner of Hwy 50 (now Bus. 50) & 87

1930-Present

As early as 1927 A. P. Carr and E. R. Proctor, proprietors of the A. P. Carr Motor company, Ford dealers, purchased this corner lot where a large 2-story house belonging to the Stone estate stood. However, it wasn't developed until the Standard Oil Company purchased the lot from Carr and Proctor in 1930.

From the March 13, 1930 California Democrat:

Sell to Standard Oil

The A. P. Carr Motor company has sold its property at the corner of highway 50 and Oak street, formerly the Stone property, to the Standard Oil company. It is understood that the Standard Oil company will use it for a filling station. The purchase price was $5,500. The lot is 105 feet square and is an excellent location.

From the March 20, 1930 Moniteau County Herald:

Standard Bought Site

The Standard Oil Company some time ago entered into a contract to purchase the corner lot of the A. P. Carr Motor Co. at Buchanan and Oak streets and last week the deal was closed, the purchase price being $5,500. This is one of the best sites in the city for a filling station, being on both Highway No. 50 and also 87. The Standard Oil Company will erect a modern and up to date station thereon, work having been started this week.

From the April 10, 1930 Moniteau County Herald:

To Manage Standard Station

Wib Green has been employed by the Standard Oil company to manage its new service station now nearing completion on highway 50 at Oak street. Wib has been taking a course of instruction given by Stand Oil in St. Louis for service station managers. For the last few months he has been working for J. W. Pope and prior to that with the A. P. Carr Motor company for a period of 2 or 3 years. Standard Oil is spending a good many thousand dollars on its station and it will be a highly modern and good-looking establishment.

From the May 22, 1930 Moniteau County Herald:

STANDARD OPENS STATION

New Institution Here Represents Investment of $10,000 to $12,000

The Standard Oil Company with Wib Green as station manager has opened its new service station on the highway at Oak street. This station represents an investment of $10,000 to $12,000, including the purchase price of the grounds, is as fine and well-equipped one as a person is likely to find in a town this size along any of the highways.

It has everything to give the motorists just what he wants in complete lubrication, gasoline, free air and service of the kind the traveling public appreciates.  Included in the equipment is a hydraulic lift which makes possible greater speed and accuracy of the lubrication of cars.

The station is featuring Iso Vis [ISO viscosity], the most favored of motor oils, and the wonderful new Red Crown Ethyl.

The investment is a tremendous one for an institution of this kind and the fact that it was made so heavy by the Standard, which is in good position to realize the possibilities of any town and any highway, might well be looked upon as a good omen for California. It shows that the Standard Oil company has confidence in the future of California and the volume of tourist traffic here.

Mr. Green and his company invite everyone to give the new station a call.
