California Potters Field Cemetery listings

Located along Highway 50 at the east edge of California along with the California City, California Masonic, Burke/Crown Hill and United Church of Christ (Evangelical) cemeteries.

According to obituaries and death certificates, this cemetery is considered part of the city maintained Crown Hill cemetery.

Buried here is a survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn (1876), Mike Madden. He was a veteran of the Indian Wars of the 1870s and came to California to work in the saddle and harness shops.

James Albin and Alan Sparks have found several news obituaries and death certificates of people buried here, as noted below. The pictures were taken in November 2005 and August 2008.

There are 161 known burials. As can be seen in photos on the left and right, the stones are spread out and undoubtedly more burials are here than there are stones. The middle left photo is a field stone marking an unknown grave. There are approximately 150 known burials with the earliest being 1878 and the last in 2004.
