Pentecostal Church Buys Humboldt School

The Pentecostal congregation, which was organized here a year ago last December, recently purchased from Mrs. Dorsey Hood her building on Owen and Main Street. It is the former Humboldt school which was erected in 1929. The late Dorsey Hood purchased the building from the California R-1 Board of Education in August 1955 shortly before his unexpected death.

The committee from the Pentecostal Church who made the deal for purchasing the building from Mrs. Hood was Eugene Cary, Kenneth Wittenberger and Rev. Elmer Iliff, pastor. They paid $4,250 for the brick building and one-half acre of ground. Some repairs have been made on the building. Sliding doors were removed to make one large room which is used for the sanctuary equipped with pews. The two cloak rooms were converted into Sunday School classrooms. There is a small basement where the furnace is located.

Prior to buying the school building the congregation had met for the past year in a store room in the Rohrbach building on the northwest corner of the courthouse square.

The Rev. Iliff preaches every Sunday morning and evening and also holds services on Thursday nights at the Pentecostal Tabernacle. He and his wife live in Jefferson City. Mr. Cary is superintendent of the Sunday School. The membership at the Tabernacle is small yet but is growing. Approximately 45 attend services regularly with larger attendance at times.
