From History of Jamestown, Missouri 1837-1987:

The church building was built in 1867 by the Masons and the Cumberland Presbyterian people. The present Assembly of God congregation was formed in 1944. [Editor’s note: Newspaper articles of the time tell of its founding in 1941] The first pastors were Sister Scott and Sister Cox. The Deacon Board consisted of Herman Buerky, Carl Buerky, and Doris Hutchison. The present (1987) pastor is Rev. Hatten and the present deacon board is Bill Buerky, J T Cassil, C H Cassil. The secretary-treasurer is Judy Buerky. The Sunday School Supt. is Gail Cook.

April 5, 1987 began the “fulfillment of a dream of the church” as the first clumps of dirt were dug on the site where a new church is to be built.

Over 30 members of the congregation as well as Jamestown city officials turned out for the ground breaking ceremonies, welcomed by Rev. Melvin Hatten of the church. Also in attendance were District Secretary L Jack Moore, Sectional Presbyter Rich Orrell and the Jamestown Assembly of God deacon board – Bill Buerky, J T Cassil, C H Cassil, Amil Pace and Herman Buerky.

Hatten was first to dig a symbolic clump of dirt with a shovel painted gold for the occasion. Each of the deacon board members followed with Herman Buerky encouraged to shovel twice as he was a member of the church’s original deacon board and is now a lifetime board member. A scripture reading and prayer were offered by Orrell and Moore, respectively.

The church purchased land last year but the planning for the new church has been going on for some time, Hatten said. He estimates the new church should be completed by mid-October.

The new church will be 34×92 feet, much larger than the present church. The main level will include a sanctuary, nursery, restrooms, pastor’s office and dressing rooms. The lower level, which features a walk-in basement, will house the fellowship hall, kitchen, restrooms and three classrooms.

On the seven acres purchased, the congregation is also hoping to develop a softball diamond, nature trail and park area. The land is just down the road from the old church, on Highway 179.

Misses Scott and Cox of Springfield arrived Monday to take up their pastorate at the newly organized church Assembly of God. Services will be conducted at the church building known as Concord which was formerly a Presbyterian church. Later, there will be a mid-week service which will probably be on Wednesday night. The headquarters for this organization are located in Springfield, Mo.

A revival meeting began Tuesday evening at the Full Gospel Assembly of God, the newly organized church in Jamestown. Meetings will be held each evening by Misses Cox and Scott the church’s co-pastors. They will be assisted by special music and speakers from Versailles, Boonville and Jefferson City.

The interior of Old Concord church has recently been decorated which improves the looks very much. The Assembly of God now hold services there.

The Jamestown Assembly of God church will observe a watch meeting New Years eve. Open house seven to nine. Services begin at 9:30 to 12:00 o’clock. Everybody welcome.

The Assembly of God congregation who recently purchased a 4-room house from J. A. Roesch engaged John Sybert to move the house  from the farm north of town to the lot here which they purchased from M. W. Gatschet.

Rev. Harry Lewis Resigns Pastorate
Jamestown

Rev. Harry Lewis has resigned his pastorate at the Assembly of God church here and he and family moved to Jefferson City Monday where his is employed in a shoe factory. Rev. Lewis plans to return here to conduct services on Sunday until a pastor is secured to take his place.

The Rev. Harry Melander of Lawson, Mo. has been appointed to the pastorate of the Assembly of God church. He succeeds the Rev. Harry Lewis who recently resigned and moved to Jefferson City. The Rev. and Mrs. Melander and 2 1-2-year old daughter moved to the church parsonage this week. Rev. Melander will deliver his first sermon on his new charge tonight (Thursday).

Miss Cledith Cox a missionary in Nigeria, Africa is home on a furlough. She visited this week with Mr. and Mrs. Carl Buerky and other friends. Miss Cox was a former pastor of the Assembly of God church here. She conducted services at the church Sunday and showed pictures of Africa.

Attending the C. A. Rally at Marshall from the Assembly of God church here Friday were Rev. and Mrs. Paul Melander and son, David, Miss Cledith Cox, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Buerky and family and Mrs. Sam Sabel.

The Rev. Paul Melander has resigned his pastorate at the Assembly of God Church. He delivered his farewell sermon last Sunday. He has accepted a pastorate at Gelion, O. [Ohio] Rev. and Mrs. Melander and two children plan to move there soon.

Rev. Albert Meeks resigned as pastor of the Assembly of God Church here after serving several years. His last sermon will be Sept. 23, after which he and Mrs. Meeks will leave.

The Rev. William Barbary is the new pastor at the Assembly of God Church. Rev. and Mrs. Barbary moved here last week from Marshalltown, Iowa. The Rev. and Mrs. Albert Meeks have moved to Carden, Okla. Rev. Meeks was pastor here for sometime.

Jamestown—The Rev. W. L. Barbary has resigned his pastorate at the Assembly of God Church. He delivered his farewell sermon here Sunday. Rev. and Mrs. Barbary plan to leave in June for Arizona.
